Preparing for Upright™ MRI
Since any MRI unit uses radio waves and a magnetic field to do its imaging, it is essential that you do NOT take these items into the MRI room: watches, coins, knives, dentures, metal framed eyeglasses, hairpins, pens, hearing aids, wallets/handbags, belt/suspenders, phones, pagers, or any loose metal objects or any electronic devices.
If you answer YES to any of these questions, you should inform the office receptionist and the MRI technologist. Do you currently have or have you ever had any of the following:
- Pacemaker? (You can only undergo an MRI with your cardiologist's signed permission and instructions)
- Surgery of the heart or heart valves?
- Brain surgery?
- Ear or eye implants?
- Metal in your eyes, or metal removed from your eyes?
- Brain aneurysm clip?
- Stimulators on nerves (TENS units)?
- Any surgeries within the past six weeks?
- Any metal on your body such as pins, body piercing jewelry, navel rings, etc.?
- Any Tattoos?
- Metal bone pins, surgical implants (hip, knee, etc.), bullets, shrapnel, etc.?
- Insulin or infusion pump?
- Artificial heart valves?
- Tattooed eyeliner?
- Intra-uterine device (IUD)?
- Penile implant?
- Are/were you a Machinist or Metalworker?
- Is there a chance of pregnancy?
- Are you claustrophobic (afraid of confined spaces)?
Scheduling and Attending Your Study
You should plan to arrive at Advanced Diagnostics at least 30 minutes before your scheduled MRI appointment for registration and briefing by our staff. Plan to allow at least one to two hours for the complete MRI, depending on the procedure to be performed.
